The poetry film ‘Velella velella‘ has been short-listed for the Scottish Arts Trust Scottish Landscapes Award 2023.
Based on CEE Artist-in-Residence Rebecca Sharp’s poem of the same name, the film is a collaboration, made by artist Steve Smart, with original score by Alex South. The poem was first commissioned for Magma Poetry’s Anthropocene edition, and will appear in Rebecca’s forthcoming new collection with Tapsalteerie (Spring 2024). From the floating perspective of the V. velella hydrozoan, the film asks: where do we find ourselves? Where are we going? What consciousness is this – that takes us so close to the edge, that could yet have a change of heart?
Rebecca will be working again with Steve and Alex during her residency with CEE: with another short film in the works, and a collaborative live performance with Alex South for the final residency event and book launch in May 2024 at the Byre Theatre.
Also shortlisted for this award are Centre Affiliates Peter Iain Campbell and Gair Dunlop. Ian’s shortlisted piece is titled ‘Ninian Northern Platform, Dales Voe, Shetland Islands {06.09.20}’. Gair has been nominated alongside collaborator Lucy Smith for their video ‘Europe Endless: green world mix‘.
All shortlisted works will be at the City Arts Centre, Edinburgh Nov 2023 – March 2024.
