Centre Director Dr Mette High has been interviewed for a special edition of Cultural Anthropology. This conversation with SCA Section Editor and Centre Affiliate Adam Fleischmann builds on the research article “Utopias of Oil: Private Equity and Entrepreneurial Ambition in the U.S. Oil and Gas Industry” by Mette M. High, which was published in the November 2022 issue of the Society’s peer-reviewed journal, Cultural Anthropology.
In this conversational interview, Mette and Adam discuss the article and its utopian imaginaries, along with a number of related topics: fieldwork access and the gendered aspects of the field, doing fieldwork with interlocutors with whom you do not share a political project, the presence of settler colonialism in U.S. State bureaucracies, the implication of academics in private equity and fossil fuel development, and more.
