Biography

Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Neil Gordon Davey is a 3rd year PhD candidate in the Programme for Innovation for Sustainability at the Faculty of Technology, Art & Design, Department of Art, Design & Drama, OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University. Neil is becoming recognized for his innovative contributions to energy transitions research through arts-based methods like participatory photography and photo-elicitation. His current research captures local perspectives on energy development, particularly in remote areas such as the Orkney Islands, combining visual anthropology with energy social science to promote an inclusive and empathetic understanding of energy transitions. Neil addresses critical issues ranging from socioeconomic disparities to the visual consequences of energy infrastructure. By engaging communities through participatory visual methods, he ensures their voices are heard and valued, enriching his research and empowering them to share their stories in meaningful ways. His interdisciplinary approach advances knowledge about how society perceives energy futures, both academically and practically. Neil has previously taught and conducted visual methods as part of various international projects, from climate change adaptation in smallholder farming and fishing communities in sub-Saharan Africa, to community policing and police reform in post-conflict settings.
