On the 24th April, we got together in what has become an annual celebration of fantastic research work done by our Undergraduate (Honors) Students!

This was the fourth 3MPlanet  competition final. And as in previous years, the students impressed us with their ideas, inquisitiveness, and impactful research projects. Accompanied by some fantastic presentation skills, honed during the training delivered by St Andrews’ Dr Rees Hughes, and Dr Sandra Appleby-Arnold.

‘Delivering a research presentation in just 3 minutes is not an easy task’ – said Dr Emilka Skrzypek, lead organiser of the 3MPlanet competition, and deputy director of the Centre for Energy Ethics. ‘It requires expert knowledge of the subject, understanding of the audience, and ability to convey often complex content in an accessible and exciting way. Our 2025 finalists excelled at this task! I walked away not only better informed but truly inspired by their work’.

After lengthy and lively deliberations, the jury comprising of Prof Nina Laurie (Geography and Sustainable Development), Dr Derek Ball (Philosophy) and Dr Cornelia Helmcke (Centre for Energy Ethics) delivered their verdict.

Evie Morgan (BScHons Medicine) was named the winner of 3MPlanet 2025, who delivered what the jury described as ‘wonderfully clear, engaging and perfectly presented’ talk on her work on reproductive decision-making in the era of climate change.

Impressed with the intellectual rigor of her work on ‘evidentiary activism’ against flaring at Mossmorran, the jury chose Em Challinor (MA Hons Philosophy and Sustainable Development) as the 3MPlanet 2025 runner up.

Last but not least, following her wonderfully thought-provoking presentation that explored microbes, agriculture, and power in the Plantationocene, the public chose Turner Wallenstrom (MA Hons Sustainable Development and Social Anthropology) as their laureate.

Huge congratulations to all applicants, finalists, and to our winners!

3MPlanet will return in 2026.
