Biography

Simon Önnered is a PhD candidate from Sweden focused on developing and challenging future energy scenarios. He actively scans the energy sector and system to identify emerging threats and opportunities. Simon also assists municipalities in their long-term energy planning, and he teaches in trendspotting, scenario design, futures- and systems thinking.
Previously, he has written about the future of circularity within the energy system through greater waste heat recovery, which was nominated for the Alex Gofman Award for most innovative research. Simon has also driven several initiatives to spread futures- and systems thinking across the energy sector. In combination with which he wrote about systemic challenges and their solutions related to Carbon Capture & Storage and the fossil industry, 100% renewable systems, and the social aspect of the energy transition. More recently, he has turned his attention towards anticipatory planning for electrification, supporting Swedish municipalities in their long-term energy planning, and building national energy scenarios to bolster resilience against emerging challenges. Simon carries a strong ethic of sufficiency which permeates his work in creating a sustainable, resilient, and just energy future.
