The Ladislav Holy Memorial Trust has announced Centre Researcher Viktoriia Grivina as the winner of this year’s David Riches Medal.

The David Riches Medal for Postgraduate Research is awarded each year to one postgraduate post-fieldwork student in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews. The David Riches Medal for Postgraduate Research is awarded on a competitive basis each year to one postgraduate post-fieldwork student in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews. Applicants are asked to submit an article length piece of work (8,000-10,000 words) based on a chapter from their thesis.

Viktoriia, who was recently featured in In the Loop, is currently in the final stages of writing up her thesis on cultural transformations of Ukrainian cities during war. With the Centre, Viktoriia has been heavily involved with the two iterations of the Ukraine: Energy in the Spotlight series which she co-organised with her PhD supervisor Professor Victoria Donovan and Kateryna Volochniuk.

Viktoriia’s award represents the fourth time a member of the Centre for Energy Ethics has won the David Riches Medal; Lorenzo Sapochetti was jointly awarded the Medal in 2023, as was Sarah O’Brien in 2022, with Anna Seeger (Rauter) also winning in 2021. Winners of the David Riches Medal present their research at the Department of Social Anthropology Research Seminars in Semester Two. You can find versions of these past presentation from Sarah and Anna on our YouTube Channel alongside Lorenzo’s Energy Cafe which covered his award-winning chapter.
