Centre Director Mette High was a speaker at the roundtable event “Power to the People: St Andrews’ journey to net-zero and the future of energy”, which took place on Thursday 28 October 2021. At the event, Dr High brought attention to Fuel Poverty in Scotland and the challenge of a fair heat transition. The Scottish Government has earlier this month published its “Heat in Buildings” strategy, identifying the decarbonisation of heating along with energy reduction initiatives as a key priority to achieve net zero for carbon emissions by 2045. However, with a large current funding gap in achieving this strategy, Dr High emphasised how we need to ensure that the net zero journey doesn’t leave those behind who are already struggling to make ends meet. With fuel poverty currently affecting about 1 in 4 households in Scotland, a fair heat transition that recognises socioeconomic inequalities is crucial.
