SUMMARY:Fusion Science and Ethical Challenges
DESCRIPTION:\n\nPresented by Piero Martin, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Padova\nIn recent times controlled thermonuclear fusion has attracted significant public, scientific, and financial interest and proposes itself as a potential player in achieving zero emissions. Scientists expect that fusion will become a key component of the global energy mix in the second half of this century, and a crucial player in a net-zero scenario. Thus far, the scientists have considered fusion as a largely technical challenge. However, as the science progresses and the realization of fusion comes closer, it necessitates conversations about non-technical issues associated with this energy source, including diverse social and ethical implications. In this talk Pietro will review the scientific situation on a global scale, analysing in particular the opportunities, the open issues and the critical paths.\n\n \nThe Centre for Energy Ethics is excited to present this hybrid event to both our in person audience and online attendees.\nFollowing the talk, we will have a tea and coffee reception for the in-person audience\n\n\nLocation\nOBS: 108 Lumsden Seminar Room, KY16 9LB\n
